Morocco: a visit to Essaouira
October 12, 2007 3:35 pm places to visit
I’ve just returned from a week in Essaouira, a small place on the coast of Morocco. Essaouira is an artist’s dream for impromptu sketching, vibrant colours and excellent photo opportunities. You can even buy natural pigments to mix your own paints with from the souks (more of that later).
Morocco is an accessible place easily reached from London. Essaouira is on the coast north of Agadir and takes about 3 to 4 hours to get there on the bus from the airport. The flight takes roughly about the same time from London. The locals speak several versions of Arabic and Berber, but most seem to speak French. You can get by on schoolgirl French quite well as long as you know some basic vocabulary, such as numbers, types of food and how to say, “No I don’t want to buy a carpet thanks”.
I recommend the hotel Riad al Medina in Essaouira, although it is not good for disabled travellers as you have to negotiate lots of steps (even to get to the shower). There are several restaurants throughout the town and one that has a rooftop bar (Taros), so you won’t go hungry not even during Ramadan.
The beach is long with clean sand and you can bask in hot sunshine almost year round. The sea is great for surfers as the wind tends to whip up some large waves, although this is not so good for those just wanting a tranquil swim.
I took hundreds of photographs, too many to include here, but if you want to see a selection then visit my web page how to fill a sketchbook: a visit to Essaouira

Diane,
I always think the colours in North Africa are so vivid, not just the bright sunshine but the contrast of the blues and yellows on the whites of the building. I just love the blue tones on the doors, edgings and ceramics. I’m sure you had a great time and it does sound like an artist’s paradise.

Yes that’s true about the colours. I think everything looks so much more vivid because of the bright light and the local people seem proud of their Mogadon blue.

In your extended photo album from Morocco, I think the picture of the beach shades in the evening light is fantastic and has a slightly mysterious sci-fi feel to it!

Hi Diane,
It seems that you really had a relaxing time satisfying both your well-being and your artistic endeavours. I am sure you got some ideas about future creative work, if you haven’t painted something already!

I shall be showing the results of my artistic experiments soon. Watch this space.

It looks like a wonderful place for an artistic retreat. I like the hotel with it’s creepers and breakfasting birds, pity about the Lionel overkill though! Did you succumb to any carpets then? I would love to take myself on a similar break to write… Really enjoyed reading your account, thanks for sharing it.

Thanks for your comment. Didn’t buy a carpet, but my friend did and I had to flee from the shopkeeper who wanted to sell me one too. Yes I recommend it as a peaceful relaxing place to visit.
